I. PURPOSE OF PROGRAM
The 3+4 Dual Degree and Dental Early Admission Program (DEAP) offers outstanding freshmen students with an interest in dentistry an opportunity to receive early acceptance to the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School and to receive both a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology at The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College and a Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) within seven years.

II. REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTANCE INTO THE PROGRAM
1. The student must be admitted to The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College.
2. When the student has completed no less than 12 and no more than 32 semester hours. Accepted academic hours can be seen by clicking here.
Acceptance will not be granted to individuals who have been charged with or convicted of a felony or misdemeanor other than minor traffic violations. (A waiver may be granted by the Dental School in exceptional situations.)
3. The student must complete an accelerated curriculum designed by The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College that consists of 98 semester hours of specified coursework. (Course requirements are listed in the Undergraduate Curriculum offered by The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College in the section below.).
4. The student must attend a DEAP Orientation workshop at the Dental School during the summer between the second and third undergraduate years. Summer research opportunities at the UTHSCSA will be made available to interested students whenever possible.
5. The student must take the Dental Admission Test (DAT) and must submit an application to the University of Texas Dental Application Center before November 1 of the third undergraduate year.
6. The student must be accepted for admission to DEAP by the Premed Advisor of the College of Science and Mathematics at The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College.
7. The student must have an acceptable pre-entry interview by faculty of the UTHSCSA Dental School. This interview is to determine the student’s motivation for the dental profession, and qualities of character and personality of value to the future dentist.
8. The student must have Texas resident status or a waiver for entry to DEAP from the Associate Dean for Student Affairs of the Dental School.

. Following successful completion of the three year curriculum at The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College, the student will enroll in the UTHSCSA Dental School contingent on the following:
a. A grade of “C” or above in all required pre-dental courses and at least 98 semester hours of specified courses.
b. A cumulative GPA of 3.4 or above for all courses taken in the three year at The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College DEAP curriculum.
c. A science GPA of 3.4 or above for all science courses required in the three-year The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College DEAP curriculum.
d. A score on the Dental Admission Test (DAT) of 18 or above
e. A positive recommendation from the Health Professions Committee of the College of Natural Science and Mathematics at The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College
f. A positive record of ethical behavior as a pre-dental student.
NOTE: Students who fall below the GPA requirements will have their application considered by the Dental School Admissions Committee and will be given favorable consideration whenever possible.

*Following successful completion of the freshman academic year of the Dental School, the student will be granted a B.S. Degree - Biology from The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College.
*Following successful completion of the four-year curriculum of Dental School, the student will be granted a D.D.S. degree by the Dental School.
The student must complete 98 hours of undergraduate course work as specified below. Upon the successful completion of the first year of dental school, 30 hours of credit from the dental school will be transferred to The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College and counted toward The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College - B.S. degree in Biology.

- BIOL 2302/2102 Anatomy and Physiology II 4 hrs (will be taken at UTHSCSA as CSBL 5016 Gross Head & Neck Anatomy -7.5 hrs and will be considered as advanced Biology elective at UTB)
- BIOL 2321/2121 Microbiology 4 hrs (will be taken at UTHSCSA as MICR 5013 Microbiology- 4.0 hrs)
- CHEM 3303/3103 Biochemistry 4 hrs (will be taken at UTHSCSA as BIOC 5013 Biochemistry -5.5 hrs)
- BIOL 3301/3101 Advanced Physiology 4 hrs (will be taken at UTHSCSA as PHYL 5013 Physiology I – 6.5 hrs)
- BIOL Generic Elective 4hrs (will be taken at UTHSCSA as RESD 5004 Dental Occlusion-5.0 hrs)
- BIOL Generic Elective 4hrs (will be taken at UTHSCSA as CSBL 5032 Dental Histology-5.0 hrs)
- CHEM ELECTIVE 3hrs (will be taken at UTHSCSA as PHAR 5001 Pharmacology-4.0 hrs)
- BIO 4370 Topics in Biology 3 hrs (will be taken at UTHSCSA as RESD 5005 Preclinical Dental Anatomy -3.0 hrs)
