Objectives |
| The
course is an introduction to Classical Thermodynamics and heat
transfer mechanism and processes. Upon completion of the course
the student should be able to:
1. Understand and proficiently apply the Laws of Thermodynamics
to analyze and study a large variety of physical situations
and processes undergone by both closed and open systems.
2. Be familiar with the different thermodynamic properties
of simple substances and with the use of Thermodynamic Tables.
3. Have a working
knowledge of the three heat transfer mechanisms (conduction,
convection and radiation) and of its empirical laws.

In addition to the final exam, at least five quizzes and
a one hour exam will be administered along the course. Base
on these quizzes and exams, as well as on class participation
and homework, a student’s performance in the course
will be assessed, according to the following criteria:

| Attendance
Policy |
| Lateness
and attendance: Students are expected to be on class on time
and attendance is mandatory. After two absences, a student grade
will be lowered one letter grade for each additional absence.
Even if the absence to a class is justified, the student is
still responsible for learning the material and carrying out
the assignment discussed in class. He should consult other students
and/or the instructor concerning the content of the class session
missed.
Class participation: Active participation of the students
in the class is encouraged. They should come to class with
a positive attitude and enthusiasm for learning.
Missed quizzes,
exams, or assignments: Attendance at quizzes and exams is
mandatory. Absence at a quiz earns a zero. There are no make-up
quizzes. To allow for contingencies, the lowest score quiz
(including any zero) will be eliminated from the quiz average.
If there are more than nine quizzes, then the two lowest quizzes
will be eliminated from the average.
