Cyber-Scorpion: Uploading your Photo and Bio Sketch to Class Wiki

Overview:

This mini tutorial will show you how to create additional pages, link to the pages, and other assorted activities in the class wiki. If additional tutorials are needed, you will find them in the individual project descriptions. If you are required to do something and do not know how, please email me so that I can provide you links to tutorials.

The wiki can be accessed at: http://cyberscorpion.pbwiki.com/

Once at the wiki, you need to login. Click on the Log in button on the right side of the wiki front page.

You will have the choice of logging in with a password (provided in the Password Log, located by clicking on Password Log link in the left sidebar of your UTTC course menu) or logging in using your PBwiki identity. If you have created a PBwiki identity, you will have access to all your wikis from one page. Either way, it is important that you always log in with your name so that you receive credit for any contributions you make to the class wiki.

If you want to be notified when a change is made to the wiki, click in the box that says "Notify me of changes." Then click on Log in.

Once you have logged in, you will notice that you now have many more options to work on the wiki. You can add pages, you can edit and revise pages, you can add comments and upload files. There is also a help button if you are not sure what to do.

Take a look at the sidebar on the right. For your first assignment, you will need to add information and a photo of yourself to your course profiles page. To do this, click on Your Course Your semester Profiles page.

For example, if you are taking EDTC 6320 in the Spring of 2008, you would click the link that states:

20 Spring 2008 Profiles as indicated by the arrow in the graphic below.

You should choose the profiles page for the course and semester in which you are currently enrolled. Please do not add your profile to EDTC 6320 unless you are in that class. That course was used strictly for demonstration purposes.

Once you are in the Current Students page, you will need to click on Edit Page to add your information.

You are then taken into the page editor. The editor uses standard format that everyone should be familiar with from using Word or other word processors. Most of the icons are labeled below. These should cover most, if not all, of the tasks you will need for your wiki chapter.

Your task will be to click in one of the blank cells in the table and add your photo and biographical information.

DIRECTIONS ON ADDING YOUR PHOTO AND BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH TO THE WIKI:

FIRST, make sure your image is no larger that 150 X 200 pixels so that we do not take up too much of the server space.

If you have an image from a digital camera, you will probably have to crop it and for sure will need to resize it for the correct dimensions.

To crop photos:  You can use any graphic editing program (like Photoshop, Photo Impact or Corel Draw) to crop and reduce the size of your images. If you do not have a graphic editing program, there is a very good free program available called PhotoFiltre that is very small with a tiny learning curve, yet contains some nice features to add effects to your photos. You can download it at: http://photofiltre.free.fr/download_en.htm

PhotoFiltre is relatively easy to use, but if you want to quickly learn the basics, please click here for a tutorial on how to crop and optimize your photos using Photo Filtre.

Please note - what we all really want to see is your face, not the huge monument behind you or the Mickey Mouse character you are posing with. So, please crop close to your face so we can see you and "place" your face with the voice we are hearing on Wimba.

If your image is cropped correctly, but too large, you can resize and optimize your photo using the freeware PIXResizer, downloaded at http://bluefive.pair.com/pixresizer.htm. Remember, the image must be no larger than 150 X 200 pixels.

Next, to add your photo and bio to the Current Students page follow the directions below.

In the edit window, you will notice that I have created a table. Choose any one of the cells in the table that says, "Please add your photo and a brief bio here" to enter your information. Highlight the text in that cell and type in your biographical sketch.

Next you will insert your photo in the cell. First make sure the cursor is to the left of the first word in your biographical sketch.

Click on Insert Image in the wiki editing toolbar. The Insert Image window will open. To insert your image, click on Browse.

Browse to find where your image is located, then highlight it and click Open.

Click on Upload to upload your image.

When your image is uploaded you will see it in the preview screen. Click OK to add your image to the cell.

Since the individual cells look better if you wrap your text around the image, you must complete this additional step. Right click on your image and then click on Image Properties.

Fill in the following when the new window opens: In Alternative Text type a brief description of the photo (for visually impaired), click on the drop-down menu for Align and select Left. Then click on OK. You have now added your photo and a biographical sketch to the wiki.

Once you have added your photo and your bio sketch, click on Save. If you like the way it looks, then you are finished with the part of the orientation. If you want to make changes, go back into Edit Page and make any changes, then Save. Your photo cell should look something like the example below.

For now, don't worry too much about how the table looks - concentrate on getting your cell to look nice. I will make changes to make the format look better once all the photos and bios are added.
