This tutorial is designed to help you begin and develop the process of creating your own FACTS design. As the authors explain, developing a lesson using the FACTS of Design is an iterative process that you modify as you go through the chapters of the book.
This tutorial will take you through the process for Chapters 4 and 5. You will continue the process with successive chapters. Remember, always save your work as you will be going back to your original design and improving it as you go through the rest of the book.
First, you will need to go to the FACTS Design website by clicking on the following URL: http://obsidian.gmu.edu/twt/opener.htm
Once at the main page, click on the puzzle piece that says: Create your own design!

You will be taken to the login screen. If you have not created a login name and password, select Click here if you are a new user! Once you create an account, you will login using that. Your account will be saved so that you can return to your lesson and make revisions or add to the content. You may want to include this login and password in your Password Log.

Once you create an account, you will be taken to a window that will allow you to either create a new project or return to a prior project that you have already saved. Since this is your first time using this tool, you will want to name your new project, then click on Submit.

Step 4: Beginning with Contents
Because you always have to begin with learning about "something," click on Contents so that you can start with the standards you want students to learn.

Once in the Contents section, you can click on State Standards to add to content. A window will open that contains a list of all states. Select your state, then choose the standards you will cover in your lesson.
When you are ready to enter the standards, you can add content by copying them from the list of state standards and pasting into the window. If you are uncertain what should be included under Contents, then click on Description for an explanation.
After adding contents, please click on Save.

Next you will begin working on Foundations. Please click on Foundations next.

Step 7: Developing foundations
Because Chapters 4 and 5 cover knowledge and problem solving, these will be the only ones that you will work with for this module. If you are uncertain of the information to be included in this section, you can click on Important Design Concepts. Once you have completed these sections, you are ready to save and go on to the next category.

After completing the Foundations, you will begin to look at types of activities that you will include in your lesson. Select Activities from the design menu. Since this is your first iteration, you may not have all the activities that you will include in the lesson. For now, try to develop at least one activity in each section: Authentic Activities, Background Building Activities, Constructing Activities, and Sharing Activities. You will be adding to these as you continue through the textbook.

In this section, you will begin thinking about how to integrate technology into the lesson. You will be provided examples of some technology tools, which are by no means exhaustive. Feel free to include any of the emerging technology tools in your lesson. When you have completed this iteration of your lesson, click on save.
In order to post your lesson to your wiki page, you will need to select Print. Your lesson will then appear as an HTML document which you can copy and paste into your wiki page.
You will continue this same process as you go through successive chapters in your textbook.
